আক্ষরিক অর্থে আপনি কি আবহাওয়ার নিচে ঠায় দাঁড়িয়ে থাকতে পারবেন? সম্ভবত হ্যাঁ। ধরে নেয়া যায় যে আপনি মেঘ, বৃষ্টি কিংবা রোদের নিচে নিছক দাঁড়িয়ে আছেন কিন্তু উদ্দেশ্য ছাড়া এরকম করার কোনো মানে হয় না।
যদি আপনি under the weather অনুভব করেন তবে এর মানে হলো, আপনি ভালো অনুভব করছেন না। হয়তো আপনি খানিকটা অসুস্থ অনুভব করছেন। এই অসুস্থতা মারাত্মক কিছু নয়—সম্ভবত বেশী সময় পড়াশোনা করার ফলে আপনার ক্লান্ত লাগছে, অথবা জ্বর জ্বর ভাব শুরু হয়েছে।

বিপর্যয় (upheaval) শুরু হওয়ার আগে একটি অস্বাভাবিক নীরব পরিবেশ।
“The strange quietness in town made her feel peaceful. Little did she know, it was just the calm before the storm.”

একটি বিপজ্জনক ঘটনা থেকে বেঁচে যাওয়া কিংবা কঠিন কোনো পরিস্থিতি কার্যকরভাবে সামাল দেয়া।
“Last year, they had some financial difficulties when her husband was fired. Together, they weathered the storm and figured out how to keep going.”
৬৩. When it rains, it pours
খারাপ ঘটনা সংখ্যায় বেশী হয় কিন্তু অনেক বড় বড় ঘটনা একই সময় সংঘটিত হয়।
“First he was laid off, then his wife got into a car accident. When it rains, it pours.“

নিজ স্বপ্নের পথে হাঁটা, এমন কাজ করা যেখানে আসলে সফল হওয়া প্রায় অসম্ভব।
“His paintings have neither style nor imagination, but he insists on being a professional painter. He’s always chasing rainbows.”
৬৫. Rain or shine
যেকোন উপায়ে একটি ঘটনা ঘটবে বোঝাতে এই ইডিয়মটি ব্যবহার করা হয়। অন্যান্য ইডিয়ম থেকে দুর্লভ এই ইডিয়মটির পার্থক্য হলো এটি অনেক সময় আক্ষরিক অর্থেও ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে। যেমন বৃষ্টি কিংবা রোদ, পরিবেশ যাই থাকুক না কেন মাঠের কনসার্ট বা উন্মুক্ত জনসভা সম্পন্ন করা হবে।
“I’ll see you at the airport, rain or shine.”
৬৬. Under the sun
পৃথিবীর সমস্ত কিছুকে বোঝায়, সাধারণত সর্বোচ্চ সীমা (superlative) বোঝাতে।
“Gili Trawangan must be one of the most beautiful islands under the sun.”
৬৭. Once in a blue moon
খুবই কদাচিৎ বা মাঝে মাঝে।
“He used to call his grandma once in a blue moon. Now that she has passed away, he regrets not making more of an effort to keep in touch.”
৬৮. Every cloud has a silver lining
প্রতিটি খারাপ পরিস্থিতির একটি ভালো দিক আছে।
“Don’t worry about losing your job. It’ll be okay. Every cloud has a silver lining!“

একটি স্থানের অর্থনীতি ভালোভাবে চলতে থাকলে এর সাথে জড়িত সব মানুষই এর থেকে লাভবান হবে।
“When the economy showed the first signs of recovering, everyone started investing and spending more. A rising tide lifts all boats.“
৭০. Get into deep water
সমস্যায় জড়িয়ে যাওয়া। উপরে উল্লেখিত in hot water ইডিয়মের অনুরূপ।
“He got into deep water when he borrowed a lot of money from a loan shark.”
৭১. Pour oil on troubled waters
মানুষের অনুভূতি ভালো করার চেষ্টা করা এবং একটি বিতর্কের পর আবার তার সাথে মিলে যাওয়া। তেল সাধারণত সমুদ্রের পানির উপরিভাগে ছড়িয়ে যায়। ফলে হয়েছে।
সাম্প্রতিক সময়ে দুর্ঘটনাবশত সমুদ্র পৃষ্ঠে তেল ছড়িয়ে যাওয়ার অনেক ঘটনা ঘটেছে। ফলে কেউ কেউ এই ইডিয়মটির মূল অর্থ নাও বুঝতে পারে। কিন্তু ইডিয়মটির প্রকৃত অর্থ জানতে পারলে আপনার কাছে দারুণ লাগবে।
“She hated seeing her two best friends arguing, so she got them together and poured oil on troubled waters.”
৭২. Make waves
সমস্যার সৃষ্টি করা, নাটকীয় উপায়ে পরিস্থিতি পরিবর্তন করা।
“She likes to make waves with her creative marketing campaigns. They get a lot of attention from customers.”
৭৩. Go with the flow
আরাম করা এবং যা ঘটছে তার সাথে তাল মিলিয়ে যাওয়া।
“Quite often in life, good things happen when you don’t make plans. Just go with the flow and see what happens!”
৭৪. Lost at sea
কোনো প্রসঙ্গে দিশেহারা বা বিভ্রান্ত হওয়া, অথবা কি করতে হবে সে বিষয়ে অনিশ্চিত হয়ে পড়া।
“I am lost at sea with this new system at work. I just can’t understand it.”
৭৫. Sail close to the wind
আইনগত অথবা সামাজিকভাবে গ্রহণযোগ্য সীমার মধ্যে পদক্ষেপ নেয়া, শেষ সীমায় পৌঁছে যাওয়া।
“They fired their accountant because he sailed too close to the wind.”
৭৬. Make a mountain out of a molehill
কোনো পরিস্থিতির তীব্রতা সম্পর্কে বাড়িয়ে বলে।
“She shouted at him angrily for being five minutes late, but it really didn’t matter that much. She really made a mountain out of a molehill.”

জনপ্রিয় হওয়া, উন্নতি করা, এগিয়ে যাওয়া।

অনেক খুশী কিংবা উত্তেজিত। “Over the moon,” “on cloud nine,” “in seventh heaven” এবং “in good spirits” একই প্রকার কয়েকটি ইডিয়মের উদাহরণ। আপনি এই
“She’s been walking on air since she found out that she’s pregnant.”

অনেক সময় আগে।
“Many moons ago, we used to be two very close friends. Now we’ve gone separate ways and lost contact.”
৮০. Castle in the sky
একটি দিবাস্বপ্ন বা আশা, বিশেষ করে কারো জীবনের জন্য, যেখানে এটি সত্যি হওয়া প্রায় অসম্ভব।

যেকোন ব্যক্তির কাছে যেকোন বস্তু বিক্রি করার সামর্থ্য; মানুষকে তার স্বার্থের বিরুদ্ধে যেতে উৎসাহী করা, অথবা অপ্রয়োজনীয় বা অসঙ্গত কিছু গ্রহণ করা।
ঠান্ডা, বরফাচ্ছন্ন অঞ্চলে বসবাস করা আদিবাসী মানুষদের Eskimo বলা হয়—তাদের কোনো বরফ প্রয়োজন হয় না! যদি আপনি তাদের কাছে বরফ বিক্রি করতে পারেন, তবে আপনি পৃথিবীর যেকোন ব্যক্তির কাছে যেকোন বস্তু বিক্রি করতে পারবেন।

একটি ঘটনা সংঘটিত হয়নি ভাব করে কোনো পরিস্থিতি এড়ানো (এড়ানোর চেষ্টা করা)।
“Stop burying your head in the sand. You haven’t been happy with him for years, why are you staying together?”
৮৭. Let the dust settle
একটি উত্তেজনাপূর্ণ কিংবা অস্বাভাবিক ঘটনার পর পরিস্থিতি শান্ত বা স্বাভাবিক হতে দেয়া।
“You just had big news yesterday, let the dust settle and don’t make any decisions yet.”
৮৮. Clear as mud
একদমই পরিষ্কার না, বোঝা সহজ না।
“He’s a great scientist, but I find his explanation of bacteria and microbes as clear as mud.”
৮৯. As cold as stone
খুব উত্সাহশূন্য এবং হৃদয়াবেগবিহীন হওয়া।

বিপদের সময় দুটি অপছন্দের বিকল্পের মধ্য থেকে একটিকে বেছে নিতেই হবে।
একই অর্থের অন্যান্য ইডিয়মের মধ্যে the lesser of two evils, between the devil and the deep blue sea, between Scylla and Charybdis, Hobson’s choice এবং Catch-22 উল্লেখযোগ্য।
“I can understand why she couldn’t make up her mind about what to do. She’s really between a rock and a hard place.”
৯১. Nip something in the bud
একটি খারাপ পরিস্থিতির শুরুতেই পদক্ষেপ নেয়ার মাধ্যমে বিপদটিকে আরো খারাপ হওয়া থেকে থামানো।
“When the kid shows the first signs of misbehaving, you should nip that bad behavior in the bud.”
৯২. Barking up the wrong tree
এমন কাজ করা যার মাধ্যমে আপনি আপনার প্রত্যাশিত ফলাফল না পাবেন না।
“If you think she’s going to lend you money, you’re barking up the wrong tree. She never lends anyone anything.”
৯৩. Out of the woods
পরিস্থিতি এখনো বিপজ্জনক কিন্তু তা খানিকটা সহজ বা উন্নত হয়েছে। পরিস্থিতির সবচেয়ে বাজে অংশ শেষ হয়েছে।
“The surgery went very well and he just needs to recover now, so he’s officially out of the woods.”
৯৪. Can’t see the forest for the trees
সম্পূর্ণ পরিস্থিতি স্পষ্ট দেখতে না পারা কারণ আপনি ক্ষুদ্র ক্ষুদ্র বিষয়ে একটু বেশী মনোযোগ দিয়ে ফেলছেন।
“He’s worried because the flowers haven’t all arrived, but everyone says the wedding has been perfect and beautiful. He just can’t see the forest for the trees.”
৯৫. To hold out an olive branch
শান্তি প্রস্তাব দেয়া (প্রতিপক্ষ অথবা শত্রুর সাথে)।
“After years of rivalry with her cousin, she decided to hold out an olive branch and go have fun together.”
৯৬. Beat around the bush
আলোচনার মূল বিষয়বস্তুতে পৌঁছানোর আগে অনেক সময় ব্যয় করা, কারণ আপনি এর মূল প্রসঙ্গ আলোচনা করতে বিব্রত বোধ করছেন।
“I don’t have much time, so stop beating around the bush and tell me what actually happened.”
এরপর থেকে আপনি কোনো ইংরেজি সিনেমা বা টিভি অনুষ্ঠান দেখার সময় সাথে খাতা-কলম নিয়ে বসুন। আপনি যেসব নতুন নতুন ফ্রেজ অথবা শব্দ শুনছেন সেগুলো লিখে রাখুন। ফলে অবসর সময়ে আপনি এগুলোর অর্থ খুঁজে নিতে পারবেন। সম্ভবত, এগুলোর মধ্যে অনেক ইডিয়ম।
আপনি যত দ্রুত ইংরেজি ইডিয়ম আয়ত্ত করবেন ঠিক তত দ্রুত ইংরেজিতে সম্পূর্ণ ফ্লুয়েন্ট হতে পারবেন।
