প্রচলিত ইংরেজি Preposition দিয়ে ইডিয়ম

Preposition এর মাধ্যমে এক বস্তুর সাপেক্ষে অন্যটির অবস্থান বোঝানো হয়। up, on এবং over এর মতো বিভিন্ন Preposition দিয়ে গঠিত কিছু ইডিয়ম নিচে খেয়াল করুন।

১৩. Up in the air

আক্ষরিকভাবে চিন্তা করলে up in the air শুনলেই আমাদের মাথায় আসবে যে বিমান, বেলুন অথবা অন্য কোনো বস্তু আকাশে ভাসছে বা উড়ছে। কিন্তু কথোপকথনের সময় কেউ আপনাকে যদি বলে যে কোনো বস্তু up in the air তবে এর মানে হচ্ছে যে কিছু বিষয় অনিয়ত বা অনিশ্চিত এবং সে বিষয়ে নিশ্চিত সিদ্ধান্ত এখনো গ্রহণ করা হয়নি।

“Jen, have you set a date for the wedding yet?”

“Not exactly, things are up in the air and we’re not sure if our families can make it on the day we wanted. Hopefully we’ll know soon and we’ll let you know as soon as possible.”

১৪. On the ball

অক্ষরগুলো আলাদা করে চিন্তা করলে আপনার মনে হবে যে একজন মানুষ সত্যি সত্যি একটি বলের উপর বসে বা দাঁড়িয়ে আছে—কিন্তু কেউ এরকমটা কেন করবে?

যদি পরিস্থিতি you’re on the ball হয় তবে এর মানে হচ্ছে আপনি খুব সহজে কতিপয় বিষয় বুঝে নিচ্ছেন। আপনি কোনো কাজের জন্য সম্পূর্ণরূপে প্রস্তুত অথবা আপনি পরিস্থিতি অনুযায়ী খুব দ্রুত (এবং সঠিকভাবে) সাড়া দিচ্ছেন।

উদাহরণস্বরূপ, মনে করুন যে আপনার বিয়ের এখনো প্রায় এক বছর বাকি কিন্তু ইতিমধ্যে আপনার সব পরিকল্পনা শেষ করে ফেলেছেন। ফলে আপনি on the ball এ আছেন কারণ অনেক মানুষই আপনার মতো এত দক্ষ হতে পারবে না!

একটু ভেবে দেখুন। get over something এর শাব্দিক অর্থ আপনি খুব সহজে ধরতে পারছেন। মনে হতে পারে যে একজন ব্যক্তি একটি বেড়া (fence) অতিক্রম করেছে। কিন্তু ইংরেজিতে ইডিয়মটি এভাবে ব্যবহৃত হয় না।

মনে করুন যে আপনি খুব কঠিন সময় পার করছেন। আপনার বয়ফ্রেন্ড বা গার্লফ্রেন্ড এর সাথে ব্রেক আপ হয়েছে—বিষয়টি কষ্টের। কিন্তু অবশেষে সময়ের সাথে সাথে আপনি আপনার সাবেক প্রেমিক বা প্রেমিকাকে ভুলে গেছেন, এর মানে হচ্ছে you have gotten over him/her, আপনি এ নিয়ে আর ভাবছেন না এবং ঘটনাটি আপনাকে আর চিন্তায় ফেলছে না। ইডিয়মটিকে আপনি get over an illness হিসেবেও ব্যবহার করতে পারেন যার মানে হতে পারে আপনি সম্পূর্ণ সুস্থ হয়ে উঠেছেন।

“How’s Paula? Has she gotten over the death of her dog yet?”

“I think so. She’s already talking about getting a new one.”

১৬. Look like a million dollars/bucks

কেমন হতো যদি we look like a million dollars কথাটি আমাদের জন্য সত্যি হতো? আমরা ধনী হয়ে যেতাম কিন্তু ইডিয়মটি আসলে অন্য কিছু বোঝায়। যদি আপনাকে কেউ বলে যে You look like a million bucks, কথাটি আপনি প্রশংসা হিসেবে নিবেন। এর মানে হচ্ছে আপনাকে সত্যিকার অর্থেই খুব চমত্কার এবং আকর্ষণীয় মনে হচ্ছে।

কখনো কখনো এই ইডিয়ম ছেলেদের জন্য ব্যবহার করা হলেও এটি মূলত মেয়েদের প্রশংসা করার সময় ব্যবহৃত হয়। আপনার কতিপয় বান্ধবী থাকতে পারে যাদের প্রতিদিনই সুন্দর দেখায়। কিন্তু বিশেষ অনুষ্ঠান যেমন বিয়ে বা পহেলা বৈশাখে তারা সুন্দর করে সাজলে কেবল তখনই তাদের প্রশংসা করতে এই ইডিয়ম ব্যবহার করুন।

“Wow, Mary, you look like a million dollars/bucks this evening. I love your dress!”

১৭. Born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth

সফল এবং ধনী পরিবারে জন্মানো ব্যক্তি।

“John was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. His parents bought him everything he wanted and sent him to the best private schools.”

১৮. To go from rags to riches

আর্থিকভাবে অস্বচ্ছল অবস্থা থেকে উন্নতি করে অনেক টাকার মালিক হওয়া।

“Actor Jim Carrey went from rags to riches. At one time, he was living in a van, but he continued to work hard and eventually became one of the highest-paid comedians in the world.”

১৯. Pay an arm and a leg for something

কোনো কিছুর জন্য অনেক টাকা পরিশোধ করা। এক্ষেত্রে আপনি “something costs an arm and a leg” কথাটিও ব্যবহার করতে পারেন।

“The price of chocolate has doubled. I nearly paid an arm and a leg for a small candy bar.”

“Chocolate costs an arm and a leg now.”

২০. To have sticky fingers

চুরি করা।

“The manager fired the cashier because he had sticky fingers. He stole more than $200 in a month.”

২১. To give a run for one’s money

কারো সাথে তার সমপর্যায়ে প্রতিযোগিতা করা। ফলে সেই ব্যক্তিকে জয়ের জন্য যথেষ্ট কষ্ট করতে হয়েছে।

“Joe really gave me a run for my money in the chess tournament. He almost beat me!”

২২. To pony up

কোনো কিছুর জন্য মূল্য পরিশোধ করা অথবা ঋণ পরিশোধ করা।

“Pony up and give me the $5 you owe me.”

“I told my roommate Jane to pony up her portion of the rent money.”

২৩. To ante up

কাউকে টাকা পরিশোধ করা (“pony up” এর অনুরূপ)।

Ante up ইডিয়মটির উৎপত্তি হয়েছে পোকার খেলে থেকে যেখানে সব কার্ড পাওয়ার আগেই (before) খেলোয়াড়রা টাকার বাজি ধরে। ল্যাটিন শব্দ ante এর অর্থ হচ্ছে “before”, ফলে এই ইডিয়মটি আপনার কাছে পরিচিত মনে হতে পারে।

যুগের তালে তালে এখন এটি আর পোকার খেলার মধ্যে সীমাবদ্ধ নেই। এই ইডিয়মটি যেকোন প্রকার ঋণ পরিশোধ করার পরিস্থিতিতে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে।

“You’d better ante up and give me that $10 I loaned you last week.”

টাকা দেয়া ছাড়াও এটি অন্যান্য বকেয়া সেবা পরিশোধের জন্য ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে।

Joe: “I’m tired of doing the housework by myself. You need to ante up or find a new roommate.”

Thomas: “I’m sorry. I’ll help more around the house.”

এই বাক্যে, Joe নামক ব্যক্তি ante up ইডিয়ম ব্যবহার করে বলছে যে Thomas এর উচিত ঘরের কাজে সহযোগিতা করা।

এর একটি অনুরূপ ইডিয়ম হচ্ছে to up the ante, যার মানে হলো “to raise the stakes/to raise the bet”। পোকার খেলায় up the ante করার মাধ্যমে একজন খেলোয়াড় তার আগের মানুষের চেয়ে বেশী টাকা বাজি ধরে। একইভাবে এটি প্রতিদিনকার কথোপকথনে ব্যবহৃত হয় যেখানে একজন ব্যক্তি বাজির টাকা বৃদ্ধি করে অথবা অধিক কাজ করতে সম্মত হয়।

“Susan agreed to type up the group report, but Billy upped the ante when he said he’d type, print and deliver the report to Professor Stephens.”

“I wanted to place a $10 bet on the soccer match, but Daniel upped the ante and raised the bet to $50.”

২৪. Break even

টাকার পরিমাণ একই থাকা, অর্থাৎ লাভ বা ক্ষতি কোনোটিই হয়নি।

“The trip to the beach cost me $100, but I almost broke even after winning $90 in a contest.”

২৫. Break the bank

অনেক ব্যয়বহুল হওয়া।

“Taking a week-long vacation would break the bank. There’s no way I could afford to do it.”

২৬. To be closefisted

এমন ব্যক্তি যিনি টাকা খরচ করতে চান না। এই ইডিয়মটি being stingy এর অনুরূপ।

“Carl is so closefisted, he won’t even buy snacks for the Christmas party.”

২৭. To go Dutch

রেস্টুরেন্টে সবাই যখন নিজের খাবারের মূল্য নিজে পরিশোধ করে।

“We had a date last night and we went Dutch. I paid for my coffee and she paid for her salad.”

২৮. Shell out money/to fork over money

কোনো কিছুর (সাধারণত ব্যয়বহুল) জন্য মূল্য পরিশোধ করা।

“I wish I didn’t buy that new car now that I’m shelling out $1,000 a month in payments.”

“She had to fork over a lot of money for traffic fines last month.”

২৯. Midas touch

সহজে টাকা রোজগার করতে পারা। এই ইডিয়মটির উৎপত্তি হয়েছে। তিনি হাত দিয়ে স্পর্শ করে সবকিছুই স্বর্ণে পরিণত করতে পারেন।

“Jane really has the Midas touch. Every business she starts becomes very successful.”

৩০. In the red/In the black

আয়ের চেয়ে বেশী টাকা হারানো।

“I’m in the red this month after paying that speeding ticket. I’ll need to find some work over the weekend for extra money.”

Being in the red এর বিপরীত হলো in the black, যার অর্থ আপনি ব্যয়ের চেয়ে বেশী টাকা রোজগার করেছেন।

“After working a couple of small jobs over the weekend, I earned an extra $500 and am back in the black.”

৩১. Receive a kickback

অবৈধভাবে/ঘুষের মাধ্যমে টাকা গ্রহণ করা।

“The police chief was arrested after the news reported he wasreceiving kickbacks from criminals to ignore certain crimes.”

“The traffic cop receives kickbacks for not writing tickets to politicians.”

৩২. Living hand to mouth

অধিক পরিমাণ টাকা ছাড়াই জীবন ধারণ করা।

“The family has been living hand to mouth ever since their father lost his job.”

৩৩. To be loaded

অনেক টাকা থাকা।

“Billy paid his Harvard Law School tuition with cash. His family is loaded.”

৩৪. Make ends meet

কেবল খাবার এবং বিল পরিশোধের মতো মৌলিক চাহিদা পূরণের জন্য টাকা রোজগার করতে পারা।

“I don’t make much from my job as a cashier, but I’m able to make ends meet. I always have enough money for rent and groceries.”

৩৫. As genuine as a three-dollar bill

এটি একটি আমেরিকান ইডিয়ম যা নকল কিছুকে তীব্র ব্যঙ্গপূর্ণভাবে ব্যাখ্যা করার জন্য ব্যবহৃত হয়।

কোনো কিছু genuine হওয়ার মানে হচ্ছে এটি প্রকৃত। কিন্তু যুক্তরাষ্ট্রে কখনোই তিন ডলারের বিল করা হয় না, এর মানে হচ্ছে a genuine three-dollar bill এর মতো কোনো কিছুরই অস্তিত্ব থাকতে পারে না।

উদাহরণস্বরূপ, এ আসল মোনা লিসা চিত্রকর্মটি আছে। যদি আপনার কলেজের আর্ট রুমে মোনা লিসার ছবি থাকে তবে তা অবশ্যই নকল। এর মানে হলো আপনার কলেজের মোনা লিসার ছবি as genuine as a three-dollar bill বলে গণ্য হবে।

“That man tried to sell me a Lamborghini from 1953. He said it was the first Lamborghini model ever made but the company didn’t exist until 10 years later. His car was as genuine as a three-dollar bill.”

৩৬. Rule of thumb

এই ইডিয়মটি কখনোই আক্ষরিকভাবে চিন্তা করবেন না। যুক্তিসম্মত চিন্তা করলে এর কোনো অর্থই আপনি মেলাতে পারবেন না। কিন্তু কাউকে যদি as a rule of thumb বলতে শুনেন তবে এর মানে হলো তারা যে প্রসঙ্গে কথা বলছে এটি সে বিষয়ের সাধারণ এবং অলিখিত নিয়ম।

এসব rules of thumb বৈজ্ঞানিক গবেষণার উপর ভিত্তি করে বানানো হয়নি। বরং এগুলো সাধারণ নিয়ম নীতি। উদাহরণস্বরূপ, এরকম কোনো লিখিত বৈজ্ঞানিক নিয়ম নেই যে পাস্তা বানানোর সময় আপনাকে গরম পানিতে তেল যুক্ত করতে হবে। কিন্তু এটি একটি rule of thumb এবং মানুষ এই কাজটিই করে। ফলে রান্নার পাত্রের গাঁয়ে পাস্তা আঠার মতো লেগে থাকবে না।

“As a rule of thumb you should always pay for your date’s dinner.”

“Why? There’s no rule stating that!”

“Yes, but it’s what all gentlemen do.”

৩৭. Keep your chin up

আপনার কি এইমাত্র আপনার বন্ধুর সাথে ঝগড়া হয়েছে? আপনি কি ইংরেজি ফাইনাল পরীক্ষায় ফেল করে বসেছেন? আপনার পছন্দের ফুটবল টিম কি ফাইনাল খেলায় হেরে গেছে? আপনি কি আপনার চাকরী হারিয়েছেন?

উপরের যেকোন প্রশ্নের উত্তর যদি আপনার জন্য “হ্যাঁ” হয়ে থাকে তবে আপনি হয়তো খানিকটা হতাশায় ভুগছেন, তাইনা?

এমন পরিস্থিতিতে একজন বন্ধু আপনাকে keep your chin up করার পরামর্শ দিতে পারে। তারা আপনাকে এই ইডিয়মটি বলার মাধ্যমে আপনাকে মানসিক সহায়তা দেয়ার চেষ্টা করছে। এর মাধ্যমে তারা বলতে চাইছে “Stay strong, you’ll get through this. Don’t let these things affect you too badly.”

“Hey, Keiren, have you had any luck finding work yet?”

“No, nothing, it’s really depressing, there’s nothing out there!”

“Don’t worry, you’ll find something soon, keep your chin up buddy and don’t stress.”

৩৮. Find your feet

এটা কি সম্ভব যে আপনি আপনার পা খুঁজে পাচ্ছেন না? এরকম হতে পারে না, কারণ আপনার পা আপনার শরীরের অবিচ্ছেদ্য অংশ। তাই কেউ যদি বলে, “they’re trying to find their feet?”, তবে এর মানে কী হতে পারে?

যদি আপনি নতুন একটি দেশে গিয়ে নতুন একটি কলেজে নিজেকে খাপ খাইয়ে নিতে চান তাহলে আপনি I’m still finding my feet কথাটি বলতে পারবেন। এর মানে হচ্ছে যে আপনি এখনো নতুন পরিবেশের সাথে তাল মেলানোর চেষ্টা করছেন।

“Lee, how’s your son doing in America?”

“He’s doing okay. He’s learned where the college is but is still finding his feet with everything else. I guess it’ll take time for him to get used to it all.

৩৯. Spice things up

To spice things up এর অর্থ হচ্ছে বিষয়গুলোকে আরো আনন্দদায়ক এবং উত্তেজনাপূর্ণ করে তোলা।

“Instead of just buying Sam a birthday gift, let’s spice things up by taking him out for dinner.”

৪০. A piece of cake

A এমন একটি কাজকে বুঝায় যা করা অনেক সহজ।

“I expected the English test to be difficult but it was a piece of cake.”

৪১. Cool as a cucumber

শসা খাওয়ার সময় অনেকটা সতেজ অনুভূতি পাওয়া যায় এবং আপনি একটি ঠান্ডা এবং শান্তিপূর্ণ তৃপ্তি পাবেন। তাই, আপনি নিজে cool as a cucumber হলে এর মানে হচ্ছে আপনি একজন শান্ত এবং ভদ্র মেজাজের মানুষ।

“My friend is nervous about taking his driving test but I’m cool as a cucumber.”

৪২. Couch Potato

যে ব্যক্তি সোফায় বসে কেবল টিভি দেখেই অনেকটা সময় পার করে ফেলে তাকে বলা হয়।

“After my uncle retired from his job, he became a couch potato.”

৪৩. Bring home the bacon

To bring home the bacon এর অর্থ হচ্ছে নিজ পরিবারের জন্য টাকা উপার্জন করা।

“Ever since her father was injured, she’s been working two jobs to bring home the bacon.”

৪৪. In hot water

যখন একজন মানুষ in hot water এ থাকে তখন এর মানে হলো সে ব্যক্তি কোনো খারাপ পরিস্থিতিতে অথবা মারাত্মক বিপদে পড়েছে।

“My brother is in hot water for failing all his college classes.”

৪৫. Compare apples and oranges

আপেল এবং কমলা ফল দুটির স্বাদ এবং বাহ্যিক চেহারা সম্পূর্ণ ভিন্ন। দুটি ভিন্ন বস্তুর মধ্যে তুলনা করা বেশ কঠিন। একইভাবে, to compare apples and oranges অর্থও দুটি ভিন্ন বিষয়ের মধ্যে তুলনা করে বসা।

“I’m not sure which I enjoy more—pottery or dancing. It’s like comparing apples and oranges.”

৪৬. Not one’s cup of tea

যদি কোনো কাজ not your cup of tea হয়ে থাকে তবে কাজটি করতে আপনি আগ্রহী নন, আপনি তা উপভোগ করেন না অথবা আপনি তা ঠিকভাবে করতে পারেন না।

“Camping is really not my cup of tea so I’m going to visit my friend in New York instead.”

৪৭. Eat like a bird

একটি ছোট পাখি কতটুকু খাবার খেতে পারে? খুব বেশী না, তাইনা? ফলে to eat like a bird ইডিয়মটির মানে হলো খুব সামান্য পরিমাণ খাবার খাওয়া।

“Don’t trouble yourself cooking such a big meal. I eat like a bird.”

৪৮. Eat like a horse

এখন, একটি ঘোড়া অবশ্যই একটি পাখির চেয়ে বড়। একটি ঘোড়া কী পরিমাণ খাবার খাবে বলে আপনার মনে হয়? ঠিকই ধরেছেন, to eat like a horse ইডিয়মের অর্থ হচ্ছে খুব বেশী পরিমাণ খাবার খাওয়া।

“My mother has to cook a lot of food when my brother comes to visit. He eats like a horse.”

৪৯. Butter [someone] up

To butter someone up এর মানে হচ্ছে কারো কাছ থেকে সুবিধা বা তার সহায়তা পাওয়ার জন্য সে ব্যক্তিকে সন্তুষ্ট করা বা তার প্রশংসা করা। এই ইডিয়মকে butter [someone] up অথবা butter up [someone] এই দুই ফরম্যাটেই ব্যবহার করা যায়।

“Everyone seems to be trying to butter up the new boss hoping to become her favorite.”

৫০. Food for thought

Food for thought এর অর্থ হচ্ছে এমন প্রসঙ্গ যা নিয়ে গভীর চিন্তা করা যুক্তিযুক্ত।

“Moving to another state is food for thought for many of those affected by the recent hurricanes in Texas and Florida.”

৫১. A smart cookie

এই ইডিয়মটি মনে রাখা সহজ। A smart cookie এর মানে হচ্ছে একজন বুদ্ধিমান ব্যক্তি।

“It shouldn’t be hard too hard for a smart cookie like you to learn Spanish.”

৫২. Packed like sardines

Sardine মাছের পাত্র খুললে সাধারণত সেগুলোকে কেমন সাজানো দেখা যায়? ঠিক ধরেছেন, মাছগুলোকে ঠাসাঠাসি করে পাত্রের ভেতর ভরে রাখা হয়েছে। তাই, packed like sardines বলতে একটি স্থানকে বোঝায় যেখানে অনেক মানুষ (অথবা প্রাণী) আছে। উদাহরণস্বরূপ- একটি কনসার্ট অথবা দর্শক ভরা খেলার মাঠ।

“Were you at the football game last night? The stadium was packed like sardines.”

৫৩. Spill the beans

আপনি দুর্ঘটনাবশত এক বাটি মটরশুঁটি হাত থেকে ফেলে দিলেন এবং সেগুলো পুরো মেঝেতে ছড়িয়ে পড়লো। এই পরিস্থিতির কথা একটু ভাবুন। Spill the beans এর অর্থ হলো অসময়ে একটি গোপন তথ্য ভুলক্রমে ফাঁস করে দেয়া।

“We were planning a surprise birthday party for Joyce this weekend. But this morning, Owen spilled the beans and now it’s no longer a surprise.”

৫৪. A bad apple

এক বাক্স ভালো আপেলের মাঝে একটি নষ্ট আপেলের কথা চিন্তা করুন। এই ছবিটি চিন্তা করলেই মনে রাখতে পারবেন যে a bad apple হলো এমন একজন ব্যক্তি যিনি সমস্যার সৃষ্টি করেন, কিংবা একই গ্রুপের অন্য ব্যক্তির জন্য খারাপ প্রভাব সৃষ্টি করে।

“Instead of focusing on college, he spends his time hanging out with bad apples.”

৫৫. Bread and butter

রুটি (Bread) এবং মাখন (butter) আমাদের অনেকের পছন্দের মৌলিক খাবার। তাই bread and butter ইডিয়মের মানে হলো এমন একটি চাকরী যা আপনার বসবাস এবং খাবার ব্যবস্থা করার জন্য প্রয়োজন।

“Fishing is the bread and butter of the friendly people I met on the island last summer.”

৫৬. Buy a lemon

To buy a lemon এর অর্থ হলো এমন বস্তু (সাধারণত মোটরচালিত গাড়ী) কেনা যা ঠিকমতো কাজ করে না বিধায় সেটা অকেজো।

“The car looked so new and shiny I had no way of knowing I was buying a lemon.”

৫৭. A hard nut to crack

একটি বোতলের ছিপি কি ভেঙ্গে খোলা সহজ হবে? অবশ্যই সব সময় না। যাই হোক, a hard nut to crack হলেন এমন ব্যক্তি যাকে সামলানো অথবা যাকে জানা কঠিন।

“I tried to be friendly with her but I was told she’s a hard nut to crack.”

৫৮. Have a sweet tooth

আপনি কি চকলেট, কেক এবং অন্যান্য মিষ্টি স্বাদের খাবার খেতে পছন্দ করেন? যদি আপনি উত্তর “হ্যাঁ” হয় তবে আপনি নিজের সম্পর্কে I have a sweet tooth বলতে পারবেন।

“Yes, I definitely have a sweet tooth. I can never walk past a bakery and not stop to buy myself a slice of chocolate cake.”
